Highlights from the first-ever Shakepay Olympics 🎉

Highlights from the first-ever Shakepay Olympics 🎉

Move over ancient Greece, there’s a new birthplace of Olympic glory.

As athletes from around the world were gathering in Paris to pursue their Olympic dreams, the Shakepay community came together for a different kind of competition – the first-ever Shakepay Olympics. 🏅

From creative challenges to (genuinely impressive) feats of endurance and digital dexterity, the community made every Shakepay Olympics event feel unique and special.

We wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who joined in on the fun on social media and made every competition as exciting as a gold medal showdown, so let’s take a victory lap through some memorable moments and shout-out some of our winners.

All the gold, silver and bronze medalists from the first-ever Shakepay Olympics 🏅

The opening ceremony

Kicking off our Olympics-themed challenges in style, we asked shakers to "pass the torch" by sharing a photo of their ShakingSats streak.

Over 600 shakers showed off the glory of their streaks.

It was clear. Let the games begin.

The triathlon

First up: the triathlon. No swimming or biking here – instead, we asked shakers to buy bitcoin, shake their phone, and use their Shakepay Card, all in one day.

This was a race against time and a workout for the wrists, but our triathletes brought their A-game.

Over 400 participants successfully completed the triathlon. Check out that merch.

The full summer merch package some of our lucky medalists received 🎁

Bitcoin archery

For our next event, we asked shakers to take a shot at Bitcoin archery. The challenge? Guess the exact price of Bitcoin (to the cent in CAD) by the end of the day. It was all about precision, luck, and a little bit of market savvy.

The price of bitcoin (bulls-eye) on competition day was: $95,815.31.

A guess of $95,815.31 would be considered a bulls-eye! 🎯

Over 500 guesses later, the closest struck within $100 of the price!

Congrats to these three archers:

  • 🥇$95890 ($74.69 off) - @romeosimulation
  • 🥈$95733.58 ($81.73 off) - @tirelessrunner
  • 🥉$95,700.23 (115.08 off) - @kuyasiopao

Gymnastics

Shakers were then asked to choreograph phone-shaking performances and were graded with the rigour of a gymnastics panel. Judging was tough, but fair – points were awarded for creativity, enthusiasm, and not accidentally throwing a phone out the window.

Here are a few submissions that really stuck the landing:

Remembering to shake without obsessing over your streak is a balancing act 🧠

Shaking dash

You thought the 100-meter dash at the Olympics was impressive? Try shaking your phone as many times as you can in 60 seconds. Shakers went all in, shaking like they were trying to start an earthquake.

This event was the closest thing we had to a photo finish, as we had to double-check our database to make sure we had the right winner. Hats off to our medalists (hope your phones are still in one piece).

Shakepay pentathlon

Welcome to what might be the most demanding event in the history of the Shakepay Olympics: the pentathlon. Shakers had to buy bitcoin, vigorously shake their phone, make a purchase with their Shakepay Card, and send a little kindness to another shaker via Shake it Forward – all in less than 24 hours. (A pentathlon typically has 5 events, but just roll with it).

The Shakepay Olympics got a little emotional… Over 100 SIFs! 🥲

Creative shake

This challenge was one part Olympic event, one part talent show. We wanted to see shakers’ ingenuity in full display, so we asked them to shake their phones in the most original way possible.

As anticipated, the creativity was off the charts. Shakers shook phones like never before (and our expectations to the core). Here are some of our favourite submissions.

Don't try this at home, kids 👷

Olympics meme contest

For our next challenge, shakers entered the meme arena and used their wit and Photoshop skills to create their best memes about Shakepay and/or the Olympics.

Here's a submissions that had us handing out tens across the board 🙌

Shakepay marathon

We wanted to encourage shakers to take a break and enjoy some fresh air, so we invited them to share a screenshot of their phone's step counter at the end of the day. Kudos to our winners – way to step it up!

32,785 steps is more than half the distance of an actual marathon 🤯 That's over 24km!

Guess the CEO’s streak

Shakepay Olympians had already proved their might. They could have lost momentum. They would not. Could anyone guess our CEO Jean’s longest streak? 500 responses later… @emilymariehall7 took home gold with the correct answer: 50 days!

How many of you can say you're better at shaking than the Shakepay CEO? 👀

The event also succeeded in reminding our CEO to keep it up.

Shake reminders are always appreciated! 💙

Synchronized shaking

Finally, shakers showed off their coordination by performing synchronized shaking routines with friends. Difficulty, execution, and music were taken into account for final scores.

A standing ovation for these synchro acts 🙆🙆

Like father, like son. Perfectly in sync 🧘

Closing ceremonies

And just like that, the first-ever Shakepay Olympics reached the finish line. To everyone who participated, thanks for every shake, meme, and step you contributed.

Time to catch your breath, and we’ll see you all at the next starting line!
